Environmental advertising campaigns to save the oceans

Every June 8th, a day is celebrated around the world to highlight the role of the oceans in the precarious balance of the planet. Because, if we don’t take care of them, there will be no habitable land. Raising awareness about their fragility and the need to take action to save them is part of some of the most interesting advertising campaigns of recent years.

They regulate the climate with their ability to absorb carbon dioxide and heat and are a vital source of resources. They harbor an immeasurable amount of biodiversity and are essential for the production of food and oxygen. Caring for the oceans is not only essential to protect marine species. It is a non-negotiable factor in the task of curbing the climate crisis and ensuring a habitable planet for future generations. And this task goes far beyond stopping the use of plastic straws or buying products made from scraps of fishing nets recovered from the sea. We need to impact public awareness and put pressure on companies and governments. In this endeavor, environmental advertising campaigns promoted by organizations working for the oceans have much to contribute.

What we talk about when we talk about environmental advertising

Environmental marketing, green marketing, environmental advertising… In recent years, the “eco” or “green” label has been added to almost everything. We dream of a very near future where it will no longer be necessary, because every product, service, or activity will be respectful of the planet. Meanwhile, environmental advertising focuses on strategies and media to raise awareness about environmental issues, generate changes among citizens, and highlight projects and organizations that work tirelessly for the environment.

June 8th is World Oceans Day, a perfect occasion to reflect on the importance of our oceans and how we can protect them. The impact of environmental advertising can drive these urgently needed changes in mindset.

  • Awareness and education. Advertising campaigns raise awareness about specific problems affecting the oceans. Plastic pollution, rising sea temperatures… Raising awareness is the first step to getting them to take responsibility and take action.
  • Disseminating concrete actions. Through creative and compelling messages, we encourage citizen participation in activities such as beach cleanups, reducing plastic use, responsible consumption, and supporting environmental policies.
  • Greater empathy. With good storytelling, an environmental advertising campaign can generate a powerful emotional connection with the public. This way, we make them feel part of the cause and spread the word.

3 TOP ENVIRONMENTAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS ABOUT THE OCEANS

There are a thousand ways to bring this important message to people. These examples of advertising campaigns about the marine environment demonstrate this:

“One Dead Sea Is Enough”

This Jordanian campaign uses striking images to raise awareness about the dangers of marine pollution and the importance of caring for our oceans.

The Plastic Ocean

The American organization Sea Shepherd teamed up with FF New York to show, with this harrowing video, the impact of plastic on the oceans, responsible for the suffering and death of countless marine species. The sad thing is that, given the amount of trash already in the seas, plastic could almost be considered another species.

The Wale, by Captain Boomer Collective

This Belgian collective placed a whale in the heart of Paris, presenting it as a “gigantic metaphor for ecosystem deregulation.” This creative environmental marketing campaign focused on impacting and raising awareness about the fragility of the oceans.

AND SO MANY MORE FROM IMPLÍCATE

For a few years now, we have been fortunate to collaborate with the international organization Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). For 2024, the proposal couldn’t be cooler: on June 7 and 8, on the esplanade of the Estación del Norte in Príncipe Pío (Madrid), an artistic intervention in the shape of a cube was held with the vibrant colors characteristic of the artist Okuda‘s palette. The intervention, which features a multicolored net of fish, symbolizes the survival of marine ecosystems and invites us to act responsibly and with empathy toward our natural environment. It also reminds us that sustainable fishing involves recognizing our responsibility toward the oceans and future generations.

But together with MSC, we have done many more things: for example, raising awareness of the environmental commitment of Cantabrian fishermen with the documentary Viaje al azul. In addition, we have developed the “Agradecidos” campaign to highlight sustainable fishing. And with Let’s Make a Deal, we’ve gone much further, proposing a signed agreement between the oceans and humanity.

#MaresParaSiempre or Pequemares are other audiovisual pieces we’ve produced for MSC over the years, and we like to think of them as our own contribution to this enormous fight to care for the oceans as they deserve. Because at Implícate, we’re clear: we’re a social communications agency in Madrid committed not only to the quality of our work, but also to making what we do meaningful. Contact us now, and we’ll tell you how we achieve it.
